Teach Kids Self-Regulation Using Creativity
Let’s use creative outlets to teach self-regulation!
Teach kids self-regulation using creativity.
Self-regulation is the skill of controlling behavioral and emotional responses. It takes time and practice for little ones to first notice an emotional response, then to choose how to react to, or “move through” that response. Children can use creativity as a tool for self regulation in many ways! We’ve outlined a few for here:
1.Drawing in Cirles
This repetitive motion of drawing a continuous circle or swirl can create a rythmic pattern to slow breathing and create a peacefulness and calm.
2.Watercolor Painting
With some watercolors and paper, ask your little artist to paint a line of color horizontally across the page. This active focus and attention to detail can help calm nerves.
3.Doing a Wiggle Dance
Actively moving to a favorite song or doing a wild wiggle dance can let energy and emotion out, plus it may illicit some giggles!
4.Organize a Snack
Sometimes we just need a little nutrition. Invite your little one to organize a snack by color or shape, then eat it!
