Let’s talk about Emotional Regulation Zones for caretakers and kiddos!

Caretakers!

Blue Zone: Low Levels of Alertness

if child is feeling bored, tired, sad, disappointed, hungry, sick or shy…

Green Zone: Ideal Levels of Alertness

if child is feeling happy, joyful, thankful, content, calm or proud…

Yellow Zone: High Levels of Alertness

if child is feeling excited, annoyed, confused, frustrated, silly or nervous…

Red Zone: Highest Levels of Alertness

if child is feeling upset, angry, elated, scared or overwhelmed…

Kids!

Blue Zone: Low Levels of Alertness

are you feeling bored, tired, sad, disappointed, hungry sick or shy?

Green Zone: Ideal Levels of Alertness

are you feelings happy, joyful, thankful, content, calm or proud?

Yellow Zone: High Levels of Alertness

are you feeling excited, annoyed, confused, frustrated, silly or nervous?

Red Zone: Highest Levels of Alertness

are you feeling upset, angry, elated, scared or overwhelmed?

allow them to take a break, encourage them to share their feelings, ask if they’d like a hug or offer support

Green Zone: Ideal Levels of Alertness

provide them with affirmations or encourage them to help and engage with others when appropriate

Yellow Zone: High Levels of Alertness

suggest they take a step back or go for a walk, remain patient, offer assistance or practice breathing exercises with child

Red Zone: Highest Levels of Alertness

continue breathing exercises, try counting to ten, encourage child to communicate with you and address their concerns as best you can
