We’re thrilled about this grant because it would enable us to provide Art Feeds programs to one more elementary school for an entire year. Our kiddos are so incredibly generous- they are quick to donate what they have so that other children can have Art Feeds programs. We’d love to spread this notion. Summer Internship Openings

We’re looking for 2 more summer interns to work in our Joplin programs! We’re calling on crazy ideas, fresh perspectives, and generous hearts to join our ranks this summer!

This summer’s going to be a doozy- We are booking summer Art Feeds weeklong camps right and left and need manpower (and fun-having troops) to make them happen. One of the greatest joys of working in the Art Feeds stratosphere is that every day is different- our projects, the kids we work with, our community partners. You get to live with other Art Feeds interns in Joplin, Missouri & work with an innovative staff to provide therapeutic art and creative development programs for children. Your responsibilities for the day could be anywhere from assembling art packs, planning an 1980′s prom, to dressing in a top hat and doing your best british accent for a class of kiddos. This experience comes nowhere else.

You will be challenged to work hard, pushed to invest in the children we serve, and encouraged to build connections that outlast the internship. Not to mention, have some crazy fun with the rest of our team. We enjoy our work, & make time for our team to come together and brainstorm, feast, play, and learn from each other.

Lesson Recap: Conversation Heart Poetry

Last week in Art Feeds programs, we revisited poetry with the hooligans. This time- we made our own conversation hearts! (And of course, ate our fill of conversation heart candy while we were at it.) Each student was passed 5 hearts with words already written on them, then 5 blank words. The challenge was to create a poem from their resources & decorate it freely. We had some amazing responses!

This was Friday in Art Feeds programs. Each student was given a chance to donate their artwork to Art Feeds to raise money for more kids to have Art Feeds class. About 70% percent did. The rest had someone else special they wanted to give theirs to. #GiveGenerously

Educator Spotlight: Miss Caitlan

Today, we would like to introduce you to one of our Gold Star Educators. Caitlan is one our our classroom leaders- she’s great with discipline, great with having fun! If you can’t tell, we like her. She answered some questions for us so you could meet her… & it turns out she likes us too!

(Here’s Caitlan with her husband Luke… probably in a subway station in Europe. They’re so cool!)

What made you want to be a part of the Art Feeds team?

I fell in love with what Meg was trying to do, her passion is quite contagious. I saw how much she and the other volunteers, now employees, loved these kiddos and wanted to see them grow. I decided I wanted to see first hand what they were seeing, so I signed up to be an educator.

What’s one of the most funny moments you’ve had?

I think one of the funniest moments I’ve had thus far was a kid telling me I was born in Mexico upon asking me how to spell it. I then informed him that I was only born in Kansas, the next state over. I know, not nearly as exciting in Mexico. You can imagine his disappointment.

What is some of the hardest things about being an Art Feeds Educator?

One of the hardest things for me to tackle as an Art Feeds Educator is when kids become really negative about their abilities or their creativity. Since life has been difficult for some these kiddos all they think is “I can’t” and sometimes it can be really challenging to work past that mentality. But, when they do work through their negative feelings, the joy they feel at the end of the project is incredible. I can see how proud they are of themselves, which makes me proud to be working with them.

What are the rewards of being an Art Feeds Educator?

Snuggies. And lots of hugs. And see answer above. Honestly, the rewards are endless, these kids are pretty incredible. They’ve survived a lot of pain and heartache, yet they still laugh and create and are able to express themselves through these mediums. Just working with them is a reward in itself.

What would you say to someone who may be considering applying for an
Art Feeds Educator position?

Do it. As long as this person is willing to pour into these kiddos like everyone else on the Art Feeds staff, they’ll be perfect for the position. These kids don’t need an art genius to be with them, they just need someone that will encourage them, listen to them, and work with them to heal.

If Art Feeds were a hairstyle, what kind would it be?

A beehive. Like what The Supremes wore.

Boogie Gram Recap

Last weekend, we spread Valentine’s Day cheer across the Joplin area with our Boogie Gram deliveries. We delivered over 13 Boogie Grams in 3 days, helping us raise approximately $350. This sponsors more than 7 students with Art Feeds programs for an entire year! We’re thankful to each supporter who purchased a Boogie Gram and each of our dancers who grooved outside on the coldest weekend of the month!

Art Mobile to Visit Mercy Health Fair on Saturday!

Art Feeds will be joining the Mercy Health Fair on Saturday February 18 from 8-12! We’ll have our Art Mobile parked out front with tours throughout the morning. We’ll also be showcasing our students’ heart-themed artwork inside. These will be up for silent auction!

Come see us at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Joplin (previously known as the John Q. Hammons Convention Center). We’ll be there from 8-12 and would love to see your face!

Lesson Recap: Secret Message Watercolors

We were secret investigators last week in Art Feeds programs! Each student we paired with a partner or 2. We spent a few minutes drawing for our friends on our watercolor paper with white crayons and pastels. Then we relinquished our creations to our partners to paint over with watercolors. We reveled together as our secret messages appeared through our colorful paints & celebrated our experiment in collaborative art!
